Philanthropy |  Mum creates toilet-themed advent calendar to prove we need better disabled toilets

Recently, one mum Sarah in London is creating an advent calendar with a difference this December to tackle the stigma around all things toilet-related, in hopes of raising awareness of the lack of toilet and changing facilities offered to disabled people.

Sarah was inspired to create the calendar, which sees her pose on her toilet wearing various Christmas-themed outfits, after having struggled to change Hadley in the disabled toilets for years due to inadequate changing facilities. Often she's forced to lie Hadley down on the floor to prepare him for the toilet or to change him and get him re-clothed, which Sarah says is ‘horrendous, undignified, unhygienic and dangerous’.For the past three years, she has been working with Changing Places, a campaign focusing on helping all of those who are unable to use standard accessible toilets.

There are currently only 1,044 specialist toilets in the UK that Hadley can actually use, while there are millions for everyone else. Sarah believes that only real change will come when more pressure is put on businesses to change laws and ensure that Changing Places are mandatory in all large public buildings, particularly anywhere that sells food and drink.
